El Niño Swell

Last week, California was slammed by the one of the biggest storms in years. Back-to-back days of heavy rain, 100mph winds, and 20ft storm surf battered the West Coast. Although surfing conditions were poor most of the week, some select spots had some moments of greatness. Here are a few Southern Orange County spots showing the brighter side of El Niño.

I recently put together a collage of all my photos from my 2007 Bali trip. This was a X-mas gift to my brother and friend Tyler. I blew it up on a 20" x 30" canvas and needless to say they were stoked!

Other Side of the Lens

My dad recently purchased a 100-400mm lens and he was kind enough to snap some photos of me with it. The shots came out very crisp and I can't wait to take some shots of my own with his new lens.

Abstract Waves

I experimented with some "out of focus" sunset shots awhile back. After reviewing the images, I noticed that some trees in the foreground made an abstract wave. I adjusted the white balance of the shot to look more like water. Pretty different from my usual shots but I was pleased with the end results.

Reef Sandals Ad - SURFING Magazine

One of my photos was selected to be in a Reef Sandals advertisement in the November issue of SURFING Magazine. The photo is a lineup shot of the Bukit Penninsula, which was taken on my 2007 Bali trip. Check out the Ad below as well as the original shot.

Hurley Pro: Lower Trestles

The top surfers in the world were in SC last week for the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles. After a week of fun combo swells, Mick Fanning edged out Dane Reynolds for the victory. I was lucky enough to tag along with Chris Bishow as he shot portraits of the surfers for Surfline. Chris used his Canon 5D MkII along with a Canon 90mm Tilt-Shift lens to create some dramatic depth of field and very interesting shots. I provided the lighting and he equipped me with a Profoto Acute B 600 pack and an Acute B head with a Profoto Beauty Dish attached. I wore the power pack in a backpack (which was hotter than heck) and attached the light to a monopod. Surfline ran a full feature on the shoot. Fall in the OC

This is one of my favorite times of year in Southern California. All the kids are back in school, combo swells bring peaks to all the beachbreaks, and great weather brings some awesome sunsets to Orange County. Two weeks ago there were back-to-back nights of beautiful sunsets. I was able to capture the second night down at the Dana Point Harbor. Here is a panoramic image from the second night. This is 6 shots wide stitched together. Some of the nicest colors I have seen in the sky and on the water.
